This Morning

There was no sleeping-in for the students who staffed "This Morning", a two hour news and information program that aired weekday mornings on WAUP from 1973 to 1975. This picture, which appeared in a February, 1975 issue of the Buchtelite, shows the happy (and remarkably alert) crew of the show. In the front row, left to right, is Dave Geraci, David A. Frye, and the late Dave Sain. In the back row is J.P. Salyer, Paul Leidig, John Pendolino, Joe Harvat and Randy Nice.

Occasionally, The University Acknowledged That We Existed

Sometimes, it seemed like WAUP was the red-haired stepchild at Akron U. But, every once in a while, we did get the public relations department to throw us a bone. The image to the right is a press release sent out in 1974 hyping the station's new Fall line-up. That line-up included "Three Easy Pieces" and an R&B show by a gentleman named Yogi Pryor. By the way, if you click on the image, you'll see a large one that you can actually read!

One Of A Kind

This extremely rare WAUP poster, the image of which was graciously provided by Pam Godfrey, provides a visual snapshot of our programming during the early 1970's. Captain Akers (upper left) was Dennis Akers, who was a sweet if somewhat "unconventional" soul. Our favorite Denny Akers story has him getting kicked off his high school football team because he took a break from practice to search the field for four-leaf clovers!

Cross-Pollenization

Officially, WAUP was part of the Department of Speech and Theatre Arts. As a result, a number of aspiring actors found themselves on the air between the many theatrical productions that AU presented. Less frequently, us radio folks crossed over onto the stage. Our most notable success was Living In The Material World.

This comedy was written, produced and directed by Pat Godfrey and Rick Urdiales. It featured a series of vignettes all pointing out the dangers of letting money rule your life. Pat is now acting in motion pictures in Florida. Rick is a published author living in Missouri. The rest of us, luckily, hung onto our day jobs!
