Ali Jamal

Some of the most dedicated and professional people we had working at WAUP were the staffers of the jazz program, Elegant Soul. At the time, Elegant Soul was one of the few (and perhaps the only) radio shows directed toward Akron's black community. Among the best of the show's hosts was Ali Jamal. Ali had a smooth voice (think of Al Green as a disc jockey) and a very thoughtful style.
Carla Cornicelli

Carla was a pretty tough cookie. She could go toe-to-toe with any guy in the station and, more often than not, reduce them to a sniveling heap. Here's a picture of Carla doing something we all probably should have done more of... attending class!

Confronting The Issues

Back in 1973, WAUP sponsored a symposium on the rights of journalists. This was a big topic back in those days of Watergate. Attending the symposium was WJW anchorman Doug Adair, some guy from WEWS whom, frankly we don't remember, and WAKR's Fred Anthony. Fred is seen here with the late Roger Emigh, Chuck Whyte and Larry States. Fred (second from right) is the one with those stylish mutton-chop sideburns!

Larry States

Larry States probably had the best set of pipes of anyone who set foot in WAUP during that era. He was one of those guys who sat in his parents' basement with a tape recorder talking to himself (by his own admission). He was one of several members of the WAUP news staff to be hired by WHLO. That talented group also included Dave Leiberth, Tony Van Gilder and Bill Jasso.
